Tour Details

You will arrive in Luang Namthta either from Vientiane by plane, or From Luang Prabang by car (8hourd) or from the northern Thailand border by car (3 hours from Houay Xay). A GDL staff will pick you up from your point of arrival and transfer you to your hotel where you can relax for the end of the day.

For early arrivals, we can organize a nice bicycle tour in the country side around Luang Namtha.

This excursion today is a pleasant paddling and exploring villages along the banks of the Nam Tha River. Wildlife can be seen while paddling.

The day begins with some basic paddle instruction and equipment familiarization before taking to the river in single or double kayaks. The Nam Tha meanders through changing forest types, inhabited by animals, such as sun bear, tiger and barking deer and a great variety of birds. The border of the Nam Ha Protected Area is reached in the Lanten village of Ban Sope Dute. Various sets of exciting but safe rapids lead up to a lunch break on the riverside.

After a typical Lao picnic, there is time for relaxation and a refreshing swim. The next paddling stretch takes the group to the Khmu village of Ban Sop Sim Noy. We continue until reaching Ban Hat Yawng of Khmu village for the night. Approximately: 20 minutes transfer/ 5 hours kayaking or rafting

After breakfast, we are ready to trek back to Luang Namtha. The first 15 minutes trek is passing through rice paddy field. We eventually enter the primary forest of Nam Ha National Park. Here the trail traverses old growth forests, follows streams along which we will notice signs of the abundant wildlife in the area. If we are lucky, we may even see some.

Our picnic lunch is served in the forest. After lunch, we continue 2 more hours trek and then cross the Nam Ha River on a bamboo raft. We hike through the forest along the banks of the Nam Tha. Monkeys have been reported in this area. If we walk quietly and luck is on our side, we may hear them. From the other side of the Nam Ha River we take a transfer back to Luang Namtha. Approximately: 4-5 hours trekking

Relaxed breakfast and transfer (time is up to you) to Houay Xay by private Minivan (around 4 hours) drive and accompanied by our English speaking guide. Rest of the day free for leisure.

In the morning your guide brings you to the boat pier from where we drive by public boat to Pakbeng on the mighty Mekong River. Picknick lunch is served on board. The boat arrives at Pakbeng before sunset for an overnight stay.

After breakfast we continue our tour by boat for around 1 hour until Thasouang. Here we switch to our private minivan. We stop for lunch on our ride to Sayaboury Town in a local restaurant.

Then we arrive in Sayaboury the natural habitat of the Asian Elephant, in Sayaboury province, South West of Luang Prabang. You will arrive at the Nam Tien Lake pier. This is a majestic lake with many islands surrounded by untouched tropical forest. Welcome to your idyllic holiday destination, the world of the Asian Elephant!

Short boat trip on the Nam Tien lake. An English speaking guide from the Elephant conservation Center will welcome you before checking in your simple yet comfortable bungalow. Dinner is served in the Restaurant of the Center.

Enjoy a western breakfast served in the restaurant.

Walk with elephants and explore the forest (1 hour walk) After a safety briefing, you will join the elephants for their daily exercise, an hour walk in the surrounding tropical forest. Stay close to the elephant, he will show you the way. Your guide will teach you how Lao people use plants and trees collected from the jungle.

Interacting with elephants (Step 2) You are now going to spend some intimate time at the Yard with Mae Khamon, Mae Bounnam, Mae Dok and Phu Thongkhoon, our four resident elephants. Elephants have a delicate diet, and under professional guidance, you will feed them. You may also learn how to ride bareback, the traditional way, sitting on the neck with the help of mahouts and guides.

Lunch: enjoy a variety of Lao foods served at our restaurant.

Discover the Nursery (15 minutes walk) After lunch, you will visit our elephant nursery. It is located deep inside the forest where the baby elephants are learning how to sustain themselves, closely watched by mum. You will receive information about the reproduction program set up by the NGO ElefantAsia while watching them play. Elephant Bath Elephants are surprisingly good swimmers and love water. You will witness the unique bond between the mahout and his elephant.

Follow the elephants to their night resting place. You will be welcomed to join the mahouts for a walk in the forest to take the elephants back to their nightly resting place. Using your knowledge recently acquired about commanding an elephant, it should not be a problem for you to take part in the action.

Sunset cruise on the lake Take a boat trip on the lake to watch the sunset over the islands while enjoying a fresh drink and snacks. Before dinner, you will have some time to visit the elephant museum, swim or simply relax on the lake shore.

Enjoy a western-style breakfast served in our restaurant.

Trekking and sightseeing (2 hours walk) Your guide will lead you for a half day trek through the forest to discover a hidden sacred Buddha footprint… You will learn about the local customs and feel amazed about the beauty of the forest and landscapes.

Transfer back to Luang Prabang by minivan after a last lunch, it will be time to say goodbye and to leave the site. A minivan will take you back to Luang Prabang. Arrival at your Hotel at around 6 pm.

Early risers can join the alms giving to the monks before returning to the restaurant for breakfast.

We start our city tour with a visit to the Museum in the former Royal Palace where you get a sense of local history. The palace was built in 1904 during the French colonial era.

We continue our tour to the most important monasteries of Luang Prabang, starting with Vat Xieng Thong, the most magnificent temple, built by King Setthathirat in 1560. Next stop is Vat Saen and last but not least we enter Vat Vixoun, the oldest operating tour in Luang Prabang, built 1513. Lunch is served in a local restaurant.

Then we continue our tour through Luang Prabang. At first we are visiting Ock Pop Tok, a textile gallery and weaving centre. At this interactive learning experience you will learn about indigenous weaving and natural dye techniques.

The Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre, Luang Prabang’s only museum about ethnic minority groups is the next stop. A guided 30 min. tour will give you more interesting facts about the Lao ethnic minorities.

Big Brother Mouse is a Lao-based and Lao-owned project started in 2006, publishing “books that make literacy fun!” The project started to give Lao children an entry platform to books as many Lao children, especially in the rural areas have never seen a book before. Now they are also publishing books that provide older readers with access to the information, ideas and pleasure, people in many countries take for granted. Here you can buy some books which you can hand out to children in remote villages you will visit on your further travels. Also it is possible to arrange a “book party” in a local school.

For the sunset we are climbing the stairs up to the Phou Si mountain from where you have a fantastic view over Luang Prabang and the surroundings.

Free time at leisure to enjoy the beauty of the town. Transfer to the airport or bus station. Other services can be arranged on request.
