Luang Prabang – Plain of Jars – Vang Vieng – Vientiane Overland (4 days)

This popular 4 day trip takes you through the most vibrant lands from Luang Prabang to Vientiane. We start from the ancient city of Luang Prabang to the infamous Plain of Jars. As we drive from Luang Prabang down to Xieng Khuang province, there will be many chances to visit local hilltribes villages of the Kamu and H’mong. Of course the visit to the mysterious Plain of Jars will be very interesting but at the same time you will learn a lot of boat the secret war that happened heavily in this area. We also spend a night in Vang Vieng to enjoy the beautiful scenery of limestone mountains, villages and explore one of its many caves.

ITINERARY

[Day 1] Luang Prabang – Phonsavan
Meals: N/A | Accommodation: hotel

We start early this morning, around 8am for the drive to Xiengkhuang, famous for the ‘Plain of Jars’. The road follows a twisty mountain route, and we make our first stop at Ban Houi Hia, which offers great views of the surrounding mountains. We then continue Ban Kiu Kharm Pom, a Khmu village to explore, before arriving in Phou Khoun for lunch. We continue on the road into Xiengkhuang province, reaching our highest altitude of the day 1500m above sea level, just after Phou Khoun. We have time to make a stop at Ban Sonboun, a Hmong village. Our final stops of the day are a reminder that this region played a major part during the Vietnam War – as we visit a hidden Buddha Cave, that served as an army hospital during the war and our final stop of the day, is an optional stop to visit an old Russian tank. We arrive at your hotel by early evening.

[Day 2] Phonsavan – Plain of Jars

This morning we visit the Mines Action Group (or MAG) office to learn about the important work they do in clearing land mines and unexploded ordnance in the area. We then drive out to the picturesque Jar Site 2, and begin a 1 hour trek along the ridge to Jar Site 3, consisting over around 150 jars located on top of a hill, offering great views. In the afternoon we visit Jar Site 1, the largest site, containing over 300 jars, before returning to your hotel by late afternoon.

[Day 3] Phonsavan – Muang Khoun – Vang Vieng

We start early this morning, visiting the interesting Central Market, then (time permitting) driving out to the ancient town of Muang Khoun, the former provincial capital, where you can explore the ruins of a number of ancient pagodas in the Lanna style and Wat Phiawat, a ruined temple containing a huge sitting Buddha. We then travel by road to Vang Vieng, stopping for a late lunch in Phou Khoun. Following lunch we stop at Ban Hin Ngon, a picturesque Hmong village. We also have an optional stop at Koe Kuang, which boasts a local forest market, offering edible snakes, rats and assorted reptiles! Our final stop of the day is a short photo stop of the stunning limestone karst scenery at Phatang Mountain view point. We then arrive in Vang Vieng by early evening where you have the rest of the day at leisure.

[Day 4] Vang Vieng – Vientiane

This morning we visit Tham Jang cave, that offers great views over the Nam Song River and surrounding karst scenery. We then set out on the road towards Vientiane. En route we stop at Tha Heua, a small village that specializes in dried fish, which you will see hanging in front of the houses. We then continue to Nam Ngum, a picturesque popular with local day trippers from Vientiane. Following lunch overlooking the lake, we stop over at Ban Keun, which is famous for its salt mine. Here you can learn about the daily working life of the local people. Just outside of Vientiane we make a final stop at the interesting Don Makai Market, an insect market, where, the more adventurous can try some of the tasty snacks on offer! We arrive in Vientiane by early evening.

Tour Details

On arrival to Yangon airport, you will be welcomed by Discovery DMC guide with a sign board and your name on it. Transfer to your hotel for check-in. After freshening up we will visit some of Yangon’s highlights; including colonial heritage buildings and bustling markets.

We complete the day with a visit to one of the world’s most spectacular monuments, the Shwedagon Pagoda, a gold covered bell dome structure that dominates the city’s skyline.

After breakfast, transfer to Yangon domestic airport for a 1hr flight to Nyaung U/Bagan. Upon arrival we start our journey to Ancient Kingdoms of Bagan with visits to the areas main temples including the Dhamayazeka Zedi for a panoramic view of the temple studded plains of Bagan. We will also learn how Bagan’s famous sand paintings and lacquer ware crafts are produced during our visits to Htilominlo Temple and Myingaba Village. We conclude the day’s sightseeing with a horse or bullock cart to witness a magical sunset behind the temples (weather permitting).

Today we’ll set off on a guided tour exploring the back roads, villages and off the beaten trails temples of Bagan on E-bikes. E-bikes are easy and fun to drive. The ride will be mix of paved and small dirt roads to experience authentic local life. Afternoon will be free time for optional activities or own explorations and adventures in Bagan. In the late afternoon, we transfer to the Ayeyarwaddy (Irrawaddy) River for a private sunset cruise where local cocktails can be enjoyed on board along with views of the temple silhouettes and bustling shore.

Enjoy breakfast and then transfer to the Bagan airport for the flight to Heho a quiet transit town with one of the few airport links in the beautiful hills of Shan State. Visit the bustling main Heho market, the meeting point for different ethnic minority groups of the surrounding areas to trade handmade goods and locally grown produce (on market days only).  Next, we take a 1-hour drive to Inle Lake that descends through the valley with views of the Shan mountains and rice paddy fields. After checking into the hotel, we embark on afternoon explorations of Inle Lake, populated with floating islands and gardens made from the naturally tangled roots of water hyacinth plants and reeds. Delight in the picturesque sights of fishermen who balance and row with one leg, a technique indigenous to the Inn Thar minority group who do this only on Inle Lake.

After breakfast we journey out by boat, following the currents of a small river to reach the Inn Thein Pagoda Complex, a site that makes us feel as if we’ve stepped through a forgotten portal in time. To access the complex, we walk through verdant bamboo groves that open up to a field covered with the ancient pagodas constructed over 1,000 years ago. We boat back to the lake and visit Phaungdaw Oo Pagoda, the home of some of the country’s most sacred Buddha statues covered in gold leaf by devout followers. We also make a visit to the Inpawkhon weaving village to learn how local silks, linens and lotus fabrics are handmade and crafted. We end our day with magnificent sunset canoe ride with boatmen who gracefully navigate and row perched on one leg.

Free time for exploring the Inle lake in the morning. After lunch in Nyaung Shwe we drive 1 hour to Heho airport for afternoon flight to Yangon. Upon arrival to Yangon we transfer to our hotel. Rest of the evening is free for relaxing & own Yangon explorations.
