On arrival to Amarapura, a curious “click click click” staccato greets the traveler and seems to reverberate everywhere. The former royal town, now more like a quaint village, is famous for its skilled artisans, from bronze casters, to silver smiths, to wood carvers.
The source of the clicks, however, speaks to the reputation of Amarapura for producing the finest hand crafted silks. The most intricate designs are created in the “Hundred Shutter” method, requiring three girls on one loom to work the 100-300 shuttles of colorful threads.
Such expensive and painstaking designs are prized by Burmese for the most special occasions.
