A BRIEF HISTORY OF SIHANOUKVILLE

Sihanoukville, also known as Kampong Som, was established in the late 1950s and named after Cambodia’s former King Norodom Sihanouk. The town was developed as the country’s first deep-water port and quickly became a symbol of Cambodia’s aspirations for modern progress. During the 1960s, it was a glamorous seaside destination for the Cambodian elite, but decades of conflict halted its development. In recent years, Sihanoukville has undergone rapid transformation, attracting investment and evolving into a vibrant coastal hub with luxury resorts, casinos, and modern infrastructure, while still offering access to pristine islands and beaches.

Sihanoukville is easily accessible via air, road, and rail. The city’s international airport receives flights from Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and select regional hubs, making it a convenient gateway to Cambodia’s southern coast. From Phnom Penh, a scenic 4-5 hour drive along National Highway 4 also connects visitors to Sihanoukville, with options ranging from private transfers to shared minivans. Additionally, a charming passenger train offers weekend services from Phnom Penh, offering a relaxed and picturesque journey to the coast.

HOW TO GET AROUND

Getting around Sihanoukville is straightforward, with tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis being the most popular and affordable ways to travel short distances.
