The Naga’s in Myanmar have been long forgotten and isolated. Nagaland was divided between India and Myanmar after independence was granted to the British colonies. While India Nagaland has prospered and developed over the past decades Myanmar side has not seen much change since.

Obtaining travel permit to the region has become easier a few years ago (other than Naga festivals) which has opened the region responsible and small scale tourism.

Myanmar Nagaland trips are suitable for people who are adventurous, open minded, interested in learning about different cultures and ways of life. You can expect the unexpected, no phone network, no electricity in villages, no food or anything to buy. In short we need to bring in everything.

There is no tourism in this region so you won’t find western toilets or showers in the villages. In guest houses in Lahe and Leishi yes. Travelling to Myanmar Nagaland is essentially time travel and an opportunity to engage with local people to learn about their ways, appreciate simple pleasures in life and celebrate the diversity and unique traditions of indigenous peoples.

When out of towns we may sleep in local houses like locals (on floor) or pitch our tents by the villages. Like in most of rural Myanmar it is customary for locals who have bigger houses to accommodate travelers and guests. Overseas guests are always the talk of the day and bring luck to the house holds.

Former headhunter Naga tribes reside in closed clan type communities in villages built on mountain slopes and ridges that were easier to defend. The life of the (Myanmar’s) Naga remains much unchanged from their ancestors time. There are many tribes that are included in the Naga group who speak a variety of dialects. Despite their headhunter history the Naga are very welcoming and hospitable hosts. Most of them were converted to Christianity nearly hundred years ago. Only few foreigners have been privileged to visit this region since the WWII.
