LOMBOK Travel Guide
Lombok is where luxury meets tranquility—an island of hidden gems, untouched beauty, and soulful simplicity.
Lombok has a rich and diverse history shaped by indigenous cultures, regional kingdoms, and international trade. Originally inhabited by the Sasak people, who still make up the majority of the population today, the island later came under the influence of the Balinese in the 18th century, resulting in a blend of Balinese Hindu and local Islamic traditions. During the colonial period, Lombok was occupied by the Dutch in the late 19th century, further shaping its political and cultural landscape. Despite its proximity to Bali, Lombok has retained a distinct identity, preserving its unique customs, language, and heritage while slowly emerging as a refined, off-the-beaten-path destination for modern travelers.
Lombok is accessible by air and sea. The easiest way to reach the island is by flying into Lombok International Airport (LOP), which receives direct flights from Bali, Jakarta, and other major cities in Indonesia, as well as limited international flights from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Alternatively, fast boats operate daily between Bali and Lombok (via Senggigi or Bangsal), providing a scenic transfer across the Lombok Strait. For those coming from the Gili Islands, short boat rides connect to mainland Lombok within 15–30 minutes.
Once on the island, getting around Lombok is relatively easy. Private car and driver hire is the most comfortable and flexible option, ideal for visiting attractions across different regions. Taxis are available in larger towns like Mataram and Senggigi, while ride-hailing apps operate in select areas. For short distances, scooter rental is popular, especially in the south near Kuta. Boat transfers are used to access the Gili Islands and more remote beaches or dive spots.
