A BRIEF HISTORY OF ULUWATU

Uluwatu holds deep cultural and spiritual significance in Balinese history. Its name derives from “ulu” (land’s end) and “watu” (rock), referencing its dramatic cliffside location. The area is most famous for Pura Luhur Uluwatu, an ancient sea temple believed to date back to the 11th century and attributed to the revered Javanese sage Empu Kuturan. Built to protect the island from evil sea spirits, the temple remains a powerful spiritual site. Over time, Uluwatu evolved from a sacred site into a surfing mecca in the 1970s and has since become one of Bali’s most exclusive enclaves—blending sacred tradition with modern luxury.

HOW TO GET THERE?

Uluwatu is located on the southwestern tip of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, around 45–60 minutes’ drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar), depending on traffic. The most convenient way to reach Uluwatu is by private car or pre-arranged transfer from the airport or major tourist areas such as Seminyak, Canggu, or Ubud. Many luxury resorts also offer chauffeured airport pick-up services for a seamless arrival experience.

HOW TO GET AROUND

Getting around Uluwatu is easiest with a private car and driver, especially since the area is spread out and public transportation is limited. Alternatively, guests staying in cliffside resorts may use hotel shuttles to nearby attractions and beaches. For adventurous travelers, scooter rentals are available but should be used cautiously due to hilly roads and limited signage.
