TURTLE ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK Travel Guide
Turtle Islands National Park is where timeless beauty and conservation meet — a sanctuary of serene beaches, starlit skies, and extraordinary wildlife moments.
Established in 1977, Turtle Islands National Park was created to protect one of the most important nesting sites for endangered green and hawksbill turtles in Southeast Asia. Located about 40 kilometers off the coast of Sandakan in Sabah, the park comprises three Malaysian islands—Selingan, Bakkungan Kecil, and Gulisan—each serving as a critical haven for turtle conservation. For centuries, indigenous coastal communities revered these islands for their natural abundance and the turtles’ symbolic role in local folklore. Today, the park operates one of the world’s oldest turtle conservation programs, combining scientific research, sustainable tourism, and habitat protection. Visitors experience the wonder of nature firsthand while contributing to vital efforts that ensure these ancient mariners continue to thrive for generations to come.
Turtle Islands National Park is accessed via Sandakan, on the east coast of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. From Sandakan Airport (SDK), a private transfer brings guests to the Sandakan jetty, where a scenic boat ride of approximately 45–60 minutes transports you across the Sulu Sea to Selingan Island, the main island open for overnight visitors. For a seamless luxury experience, private transfers, VIP airport services, and private boat charters can be arranged to ensure comfort and exclusivity from arrival to island landing.
Movement within Turtle Islands National Park is simple and relaxed, as the islands are compact and designed for immersive, low-impact experiences. Guests typically explore on foot, strolling along white-sand beaches and around conservation facilities with ease. Activities such as turtle nesting tours, hatchling releases, snorkeling trips, and sunset walks are organized and guided by the park’s conservation team. For island-hopping or custom marine excursions, private boat charters can be arranged, offering stylish access to surrounding waters and nearby coral reefs.
