NAGALAND EXPEDITION

Pick up from your hotel in Mandalay and transfer to airport for flight to Khamti. Khamti is the administrative capital of the region and situated on the shore of Chindwin River. Spend rest of the day exploring the town. Overnight at simple hotel or guesthouse.

Breakfast at the morning market. Stroll around or join your guide for last rations shopping at the market. We then cross the Chindwin River and drive overland to Lahe. The scenic but bumpy jeep road weaves through forest covered mountain ranges and finally arrives to Lahe, a small Naga town perched on beautiful mountain slope looking down to a river valley. We explore the town and ceremonial Naga drum and festival grounds and take a stroll to nearby farms to see what crops are in season. Lahe is one the most remote towns and has very limited eletricity supply and phone connections. Overnight at Naga Hills Lodge.

After breakfast bid farewells to our hosts in Lahe. If you have any bigger bags you can store them here and travel as light as possible. We drive out of Lahe deeper into Naga hills and spend the day traversing stunningly beautiful mountain ranges that continue as far as eye can see stopping enroute at some Naga villages. After a long day’s journey, we arrive at a village in the late afternoon and will be met by our hosts. Overnight in a local house or camp.

We spend the day exploring the near-by villages meeting locals and learning about their unique culture and ways of life. The village elders have managed to preserve the traditions and customs of the Naga through centuries. The friendly villagers are always keen to show us around their community.

Today we embark on a day trek visiting another Naga tribe belonging to a different group with similar traditions and strong adherence to traditional ways of life. During our trek through the beautiful rolling hills of Nagaland, we’ll come across mountain cultivations and learn how the Nagas prevail in these remote regions. At the village, we’ll see beautiful wood carvings decorating the village houses, occasionally villagers producing gunpowder used in hunting, we may try the ceremonial log drums played during Naga festivals and ceremonies. From the village, the surrounding hills landscape and deep valleys are gorgeous sights. In the afternoon we trek back to our base to spend the night.

Today we travel on the back of motorbikes through the stunning landscape to another Naga community village where we will spend the night. Depending what time we arrive we may have time for an afternoon walk to explore the village surroundings.

We spend the full day at the village. We’ll visit traditional Naga long houses that can house up to 15 families, local granaries and cultivation fields and just soak in the daily life of the Naga people. The views of the surrounding landscape of hills and fields are beautiful and the village is often above the cloud line, creating a magical sight.

A bumpy ride back to civilization and Lahe town. Settle in to our lodge/ guest house. Enjoy shower, restaurants and other services available here which feel like luxury after spending a few days off the grid.

Drive back to Khamti approx. 4hrs. Depending on your flight time you might be able to fly out already this afternoon.

Return flight to Mandalay and transfer to your hotel.
