A BRIEF HISTORY OF PHAN THIET

Phan Thiet, the capital of Bình Thuận Province, has long been shaped by its strategic coastal location and rich cultural heritage. Once home to the Cham people, the region still bears traces of their ancient civilization, including the historic Po Sah Inu Towers dating back to the 8th–9th centuries. During the Nguyễn Dynasty, Phan Thiet became a thriving fishing port, its sheltered bay providing safe anchorage for trade vessels. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it evolved into a hub for salt production and fish sauce—a tradition that continues to define its economy today.
