KEP PROVINCE

Where Tranquility Meets Luxury

KEP PROVINCE TOURS & HIGHLIGHTS

Tucked along Cambodia’s southern coast, Kep Province is a serene escape famed for its timeless charm, colonial-era remnants, and exquisite seafood. Once a glamorous seaside retreat for the French elite, today Kep offers a luxurious yet laid-back atmosphere with elegant boutique resorts, tranquil beaches, and dramatic coastal views. Surrounded by lush hills and pepper plantations, it’s also the gateway to the idyllic Rabbit Island (Koh Tonsay), known for its unspoiled shores and rustic tranquility. Whether you’re indulging in gourmet crab dishes at the vibrant local market or unwinding with a sunset massage by the sea, Kep promises refined relaxation and a taste of Cambodia’s coastal elegance.

Kep whispers of a bygone elegance — where jungle-clad hills meet tranquil shores, and time slows down to the rhythm of sea breezes and the scent of pepper and salt.

Kep Province, once known as “Kep-sur-Mer” during the French colonial era, was a fashionable seaside retreat for the elite in the early 20th century. Established by the French in 1908, the town quickly developed into a Riviera-style resort, complete with colonial villas and elegant promenades. After Cambodia’s independence, Kep continued to attract wealthy locals and officials until the Khmer Rouge era, which saw much of the town abandoned and its architecture left in ruins. In recent decades, Kep has experienced a revival, blending its historical charm with low-key tourism, organic farming, and luxury eco-resorts. The crumbling French mansions, pepper plantations, and laid-back atmosphere tell the story of a destination that has gracefully weathered the tides of history.

Kep is readily accessible from major Cambodian cities, primarily Phnom Penh and the nearby town of Kampot. From Phnom Penh, you can opt for a bus or minivan, with several reputable companies offering direct services that typically take 3-5 hours. Alternatively, a train service also connects Phnom Penh to Kep (or more commonly, Kampot, from where you’d need onward transport). For a quicker and more comfortable journey, private taxis are available. If you’re coming from Kampot, which is only about 25-30km away, tuk-tuks, shared taxis, or even renting a motorbike are convenient options, with the journey taking approximately 30-45 minutes. International visitors can fly into Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS) and then arrange a taxi or bus transfer to Kep, which is about a 2-3 hour drive, or fly into Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) and connect from there.

Getting around Kep is relatively easy due to its compact size. The most common and convenient modes of transport are tuk-tuks and moto-dops (motorcycle taxis), both readily available and affordable for short distances; remember to negotiate fares beforehand. For those who enjoy exploring at their own pace, renting a bicycle or motorbike is a popular choice, allowing you to easily navigate the scenic coastal roads, visit the Crab Market, and explore Kep National Park. Walking is also a pleasant option for exploring the central area, including Kep Beach and the famous Crab Market. For a unique experience, consider a boat trip to nearby Rabbit Island (Koh Tonsay) from the pier.
