Where ancient stone meets sky, Preah Vihear Province invites you to stand on the edge of history and gaze across the timeless landscapes of Cambodia.

Preah Vihear Province, located in northern Cambodia along the Thai border, has a rich and complex history shaped by its strategic location and cultural significance. The province is most famously home to the Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to the early 9th century and was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Built during the height of the Khmer Empire, the temple is a masterpiece of classical Khmer architecture and symbolizes the empire’s religious and political power. Over the centuries, the region has been a point of contention between Cambodia and Thailand, with sovereignty disputes continuing into the 21st century. Despite its remote location, Preah Vihear Province remains a poignant testament to Cambodia’s ancient heritage and resilience.

Preah Vihear Province is accessible by road from several key destinations in Cambodia. From Siem Reap, it takes approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours by private car or van to reach Preah Vihear town. For those coming from Phnom Penh, the journey takes around 7 to 8 hours by road. While public buses and shared taxis are available, travelers seeking comfort and flexibility may prefer to arrange a private transfer or guided tour. There are no direct flights, and the nearest airport is in Siem Reap.

Getting around Preah Vihear Province is best done with a private car or 4WD, especially for visiting remote temples like Preah Vihear and Koh Ker, which are located off the main highways. Many roads are unpaved and can be rough, particularly during the rainy season. Local motorbike taxis (motos) are available in towns but may not be suitable for long distances. Hiring a local guide and driver is highly recommended to ensure convenient access to the region’s key historical and cultural sites.
