KHONG ISLAND Travel Guide

Khong Island, the largest island in Laos and heart of the Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands) region, offers a rare blend of natural beauty, cultural authenticity, and laid-back luxury. Nestled in the Mekong River near the Cambodian border, this tranquil haven is a perfect escape for travelers seeking to unwind amid palm-fringed shores, lush rice paddies, and traditional fishing villages. Here, you can cruise through a labyrinth of river channels, spot endangered Irrawaddy dolphins, explore French colonial remnants, and watch golden sunsets over the Mekong. For those in search of meaningful slow travel and riverside relaxation, Khong Island is an unforgettable retreat in southern Laos.

Let the currents of the Mekong guide you to Khong Island — where time slows, nature thrives, and tranquility reigns among the 4,000 Islands of southern Laos.

Khong Island, also known as Don Khong, has long been a vital part of southern Laos due to its strategic location on the Mekong River. Historically, the island served as an important river trading post, linking Laos with Cambodia and Vietnam. During the French colonial era, Khong Island gained prominence with the construction of the Don Det–Don Khon railway—part of a clever effort to bypass the nearby waterfalls and navigate goods along the river. Over the centuries, the island has maintained its traditional way of life, with its temples, stilt houses, and fishing communities reflecting the rhythms of the river and the enduring culture of the Lao people. Today, Khong Island is celebrated for its peaceful charm and as a gateway to exploring the Si Phan Don region.

Khong Island is located in southern Laos, near the Cambodian border, and is most easily accessed via the town of Pakse. From Pakse, travelers can take a minivan or private car (approximately 2.5–3 hours) to the riverside town of Nakasong. From there, local boats ferry passengers across the Mekong River to Khong Island. Alternatively, some luxury tour operators arrange direct transfers and private charters for a seamless journey to the island.

Getting around Khong Island is part of the charm — the pace is slow, and transport is relaxed. Bicycles and scooters are the most popular and convenient ways to explore the island’s quiet roads, villages, and temples. For a more immersive experience, traditional boat rides and river cruises are available to visit neighboring islands or cruise the Mekong at sunset. Walking is also enjoyable, especially within Muang Khong village where most guesthouses, cafes, and local attractions are within easy reach.
