Construction of a new airport has begun near the ancient city of Mrauk U, in Myanmars North Western Rakhine State. The airport is part of the regional governments plan to vastly improve access to the city and develop the tourism industry in the region.
The airport is being built on the eastern side of Mrauk U along the Sittwe – Yangon highway and is scheduled to be completed by 2021. Once complete, the airport is expected to bring a big boost to the areas nascent tourism industry. Up until now, transportation connections to Mrauk U have been limited resulting in few annual visitors.
Mrauk U is the former capital of the ancient Rakhine Kingdom and over 1,500 pagodas and structures from the time period still stand, making the region one of Myanmar’s most significant archeological sites.
Officials are also hoping to put Mrauk U, on the UNESCO World Heritage List, with a draft nomination due to be submitted by September 2018.
