Kawthaung Airport in Southern Myanmar will undergo renovations to facilitate international flights. Plans are in place to extend the runways and upgrade the existing facilities at the airport. Kawthaung is the primary gateway to the famed Mergui Archipelago.
The Myanmar Tourism Ministry is keen to promote the region and is eager to improve access to the islands. The beauty and pristine nature of the islands and potential for activities including scuba diving and hiking offer a natural draw for visitors. However, due to limited facilities and infrastructure, the tourism potential of the region has remained largely untapped. Once the Kawthaung airport is upgraded however, the Tourism Ministry hopes that flights from other ASEAN countries will be launched. This would be a major step in making the region more accessible and affordable.
