In order to boost trade and tourism between Myanmar and Indonesia, Myanmar Airways International (MAI) and Indonesian flag carrier Garuda Indonesia have signed a code-share deal. Under the new code-share deal the two airlines will connect Yangon and Jakarta via Bangkok and Singapore. The airlines hope to commence flights in mid-December and are awaiting government approval. Myanmar is an increasingly important destination for Indonesia with air travel between the two countries rising sharply in recent years, from 4,500 passengers per month in 2013 to 6,000 passengers per month this year.
