Mogoko Reopen

The travel ban to the town of Mogok, 200km north of Mandalay, has been lifted and the region is officially open to tourists again. However, tourists planning to visit still need to acquire a travel permit and visit with a licensed guide. Discovery DMC organizes tailored trips to Mogok, including permits, for both groups and individuals travelers.  Our most popular tour to the region has been the 4 Day Mogok Ruby Land Tour.

Mogok is also known as the ‘Valley of Rubies” and is famous for supplying 90% of worlds high grade rubies as well as a wealth of other precious stones. The town is located 200km north of Mandalay and can only be reached by private car.

The spectacular landscape surrounding Mogok is abundant with rich deposits of pigeon blood rubies, blue sapphires and even extremely rare stones like painite, hibbonite, and poudretteite. Mines are dotted throughout the hillside surrounding the town. Visiting some of the shaft mines make for a unique experience.  To see the stones or possible even purchase some yourself, licensed vendors can be found at the ruby markets in town.

Just outside of the town is the village of Ywar Thar Yar where an old British war cemetery, built in the 19th century, is located. A colonial ammunition store is also found near the cemetery. The two sites make for an interesting visit for those with an interest in the countries colonial past.
