The Rakhine State government plans to implement a new hotel zone near Myanmar’s famous beach getaway Ngapali. A location for the hotel zone has not been designated yet and an assessment of the area will take place in the coming month.
The plan aims to boost long term sustainable tourism in the region and is a response to reports of unregulated hotel construction in the area. Hoteliers in the area agree that the beach would need better control and management policies as the tourism sector grows.
Ngapali Beach now has 26 hotels offering about 890 rooms. 18 hotels have about 600 rooms under construction. International arrivals increased 20% last year – from 38,555 in 2015 to 43,440 tourists in 2016.
