El Nido’s history stretches back thousands of years, with archaeological findings revealing human presence as early as 22,000 years ago in the Ille Cave of Dewil Valley. The area was once inhabited by the Tagbanwa people, one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Philippines, who still maintain a strong cultural presence today. During the Spanish colonial period, the area was called Bacuit, but was renamed El Nido (meaning “The Nest”) in the 1950s, in reference to the edible nests of swiftlets found in the limestone cliffs — a prized delicacy and export. Over time, El Nido evolved from a quiet fishing village into a world-renowned eco-tourism and luxury travel destination, celebrated for its protected marine parks, extraordinary biodiversity, and unspoiled natural landscapes.

El Nido is accessible by air and land. The fastest way is to fly into El Nido Airport (Lio Airport) from Manila or Cebu via direct flights operated by select airlines.
