Vietnam’s New Visa Policy Allows Tourist E-Visas to Be Extended up to 90 Days

During its ongoing fifth session held on June 24, the National Assembly of Vietnam approved the extension of tourist e-visas from 30 to 90 days, starting from August 15, 2023.

Under the new regulation, an e-visa enables foreign visitors to enter and exit the country multiple times within a 90-day period, eliminating the need to go through the visa application process repeatedly.

Additionally, citizens from countries that have unilaterally been exempted from visa requirements by Vietnam will now be permitted temporary residency for 45 days, an increase from the previous 15-day limit. Their visa issuance and temporary residence extension will be evaluated based on relevant rules and regulations.

The legislation on revisions and additions to certain articles of the legislation on the Exit and Entry of Vietnamese Citizens, as well as the Law on Foreigners’ Entry into, Exit from, Transit through, and Residence in Vietnam, was passed by the 15th legislature with an overwhelming majority of 95.14% voting “yes.”

The new bill will come into effect on August 15, 2023. Le Tan Toi, the Chairman of the NA Committee for National Defence and Security, emphasized that online immigration processes would enhance the efficiency of entry and departure operations, benefiting both Vietnamese citizens and foreigners.

Presently, the e-visas issued by the Immigration Department to foreigners through the electronic transaction system are only valid for a single entry. Vietnam grants e-visas to nationals of 80 countries.
